Measurement Error in Recreation Demand Models: The Joint Estimation of Participation, Site Choice, and Site Characteristics

چکیده
In the demand for recreational fishing sites, an important explanatory variable differentiating sites is the unobserved expected catch rate. Since the observed catch rate is subject to sampling variability, using the average of a site’s observed catch rates causes the parameter estimator on catch to be biased downward. We develop and demonstrate a solution to this errors-in-variables problem when there are repeated measurements on the catch rate. Consistent and efficient estimates of both the demand parameters and the expected catch rates are obtained by simultaneously estimating them by maximum likelihood. An empirical example demonstrates the importance of simultaneous estimation. Q 1998 Academic Press

TWO RUMs unCLOAKED: Nested-Logit Models of Site Choice and Nested-Logit Models of Participation and Site Choice
Nested logit is increasingly advocated as a tool of recreational demand and benefit estimation. The intent of this short monograph is to lay out, in a simple fashion, the theory behind the nested-logit model of site choice and the nested-logit model of participation and site choice. Rigorous but straightforward derivations of the properties of nested-logit models are provided, including the pro...
متن کاملPREDICTIVE MODELS OF THE DOMINANT PERIOD OF SITE USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK AND MICROTREMOR MEASUREMENTS: APPLICATION TO URMIA, IRAN
Direct drilling method and the use of microtremor studies are among the most commonly used available methods utilized to estimate dynamic parameters for a site. One of the most important parameters is the dominant period of the site whose estimation plays a pivotal role in seismic hazard mitigation. The conventional models obtained are not capable of estimating the parameters that govern the se...
متن کامل1 Choice Set Definition Issues in a Kuhn - Tucker Model of Recreation Demand
Much of the literature on choice sets has focused on how alternative specifications of market scope and site definition impact site selection models and the resulting welfare estimates per choice occasion. In this paper, choice set definition issues are investigated using the KuhnTucker model, which integrates the site selection and participation decisions in a unified and utility theoretic fra...
متن کاملValuing a Beach Day with a Repeated Nested Logit Model of Participation, Site Choice, and Stochastic Time Value
Beach recreation values are often needed by policy-makers and resource managers to efficiently manage coastal resources, especially in popular coastal areas like Southern California. This article presents welfare values derived from random utility maximization-based recreation demand models that explain an individual’s decisions about whether or not to visit a beach and which beach to visit. Th...
